Gambling has been very popular in Russia as UK casinos. There are more than five hundred gambling establishments in Moscow alone. There are many more in the rest of the country. This will all be changed if President Putin has his way. Proposals, which have passed the first reading in the Duma, will close all of the casinos and smaller gambling establishments in the nation and relocate them to four gambling zones.
These gambling zones will be in different parts of the country. They plan to establishment two zones in European Russia and one each in Siberia and the Far East. In order to operate in one of the gambling zones, the casinos will have to have a five year federal license. They will form the first zone in July of 2007 and the last in July 2009 and will be the only place in the country where gambling is legal. These proposals are what passed on the first reading and they have another reading coming before the end of the year.
There are expected to be many changes since the current plan prevents people from gambling in their own homes. The present plan also relocates the gambling industry to unpopulated areas, far from their base of customers. The gambling business is Russia does about five billions dollars a year in business. There is also some talk of limiting gambling on the internet. This is a real blow to the Russian gambling industry.
